Just returned from a 3 day weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. First, of all I must say that the traffic and driving in Atlanta is like no other. Not only is the driving very aggressive, but you also must be very defensive when it comes to driving because if you slip up and you are not on your game you will get hit. This is something I would want to know before I planned on renting a car or driving in Atlanta.
Driving aside, I was very touristy this weekend and here is what I did.
Atlanta Aquarium
Would highly recommend 8/10, it is for sure a 10/10 for sensory hour 8am-9am. When the aquarium opens for the first hour it is free of music, large crowds and bright lights. Making it suitable for those who benefit from less stimulation. My friends and I however, did not know that the hours we signed up for were during sensory hour so we had a very peaceful morning. However, one hour is not nearly enough to see all the exhibits. It took us close to 3 hours to see the whole aquarium. There are 2 gift shops, a food court and multiple floors to the aquarium. Most of the aquarium is wheelchair friendly and easy to navigate. Highlights include the interactive exhibit that allows you to tough stingrays and the multicolor jellyfish wall.
Coca-Cola Museum
Going here was a last minute decision on our part. It is right next to the aquarium so right after we finished at the aquarium we decided to go. This museum is very unique and interesting. The highlights include being able to sample drink flavors from other countries and taking a picture with the Coke polar bear. There is also a lot about the history of coca cola and how it became the business tycoon it is.
Olympic Park/Centennial Park
This is something I personally liked a lot as well. Centennial Park is a free park also within walking distance of the aquarium and museums. Seeing the park and the history monuments from the 1996 Olympics was unique. The olympic rings and olympic water fountains were still open for visitors additionally there are many other smaller monuments around the park commemorating the olympics.
Lullwater Park
This is a park that is associated with Emory University. This is a park in the city that allows you to forget for a minute that you are in the city. This park has a few paved and unpaved paths that are short in distance, but run by a suspension bridge that you can walk over, a man made waterfall that was once part of an old mill and a graffitied stone structure that use to be part of the mill. Good for a breather when in the city.
CDC/ CDC Museum
The CDC Museum and CDC building were closed to the public for obvious reasons. However, there were very dated signs around the perimeter of the CDC building and gave some timelines of public health crisis throughout the US.
Overall, the weather was perfect, sunny 75 and no rain. Had a wonderful weekend, would recommend.
Until Next Time,
Macy
