Having just visited Hot Springs, Arkansas I thought now would be the perfect time to reflect on it.
We only had a long weekend to spend in Arkansas and a lot of it was spent driving. However, almost 2 full days were spent in Arkansas and we made the most of it.
Where did we stay?
Hotel Hot Springs
Would recommend, hotel was clean and staff was kind, nothing special about the hotel, however the reason I would recommend it over others is because it is within walking distance of Hot Springs National Park and just minutes away from the main strip. It was so nice to not have to drive the car at all the few days we were there and that we could always go back and forth from the hotel if needed. Another hotel within walking distance is called The Arlington. This hotel is another I would recommend due to its close proximity and unique history. There were many other hotels within close driving distance, however I think what made this extra special is that we could walk and see everything.
What's Up with the Hot Springs Water?
The Hot Springs are the staple of the city. Therefore, not only will you see live hot springs water coming from the ground throughout the city, you will also see designated watering fountains designated for filling up jugs for free. This magical mineral water is known for its healing properties and really does make its way into every aspect of the town.
What is Bathhouse Row?
This is the main attraction of Hot Springs National Park in my opinion. If you are visiting you must stop by bathhouse row. You can feel the history and I highly recommend taking part in everything each bathhouse has to offer. The 2 bathhouses that are still operational are Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Bathhouse. We personally scheduled a traditional bath package at Buckstaff bathhouse and it did not disappoint. Honestly, it was the highlight of the trip. This spa package is historical and takes you back in time to what it was like back in the bathhouses prime. Quapaw Bathhouse however is a modern day spa and I imagine that is amazing as well. Bathing in the hot springs mineral water was fantastic and everyone that worked there was great! Additionally, the other bathhouses are a cultural center, visitors center, Superior Brewery (brews and root beer made with the hot springs water *highly recommend*), Hale Hotel, and the Bathhouse Row Emporium.
The Mob Museum?
On of the most underrated parts of the trip was the mob museum. When researching for my trip I saw nothing about the mob museum and honestly we just happened upon it one of the days when we were out shopping. This ended up being one of the best parts of the trip. This museum tour is not as much about the artifacts and more about the history of Hot Springs. It was phenomenal. After leaving I felt that I understood the city and its history and honestly I couldn't wait to come back to see more of the city.
Hot Springs Mountain?
Right behind the bathhouses are actually a lot of hiking trails I would recommend. One is The Grand Promenade, this is a paved path that takes you by multiple outdoor hot springs. If you are looking for a little bit of incline you are going to want to hike to the top of Hot Springs Mountain. The trail to the outlook on the mountain is less than a mile, but it is straight up. This trail was not easy and was not paved, however after hiking to the top we realized that there is a scenic drive up to the top as well if that sounds more your speed. The view from the top is beautiful and you can see the cities in the distance for miles.
Lake Catherine State Park?
Our last stop before leaving was a morning hike in Lake Catherine State Park and it did not disappoint. We chose the shorter waterfall trail that was a moderate hike that was only about 2 miles round trip and it took us to a beautiful water fall. See pictures below. I only wish I could have explored more of the surrounding areas, Arkansas is called the natural state for a reason.
Hope you find some of our trip helpful and hope you all get to enjoy it first hand someday!
Until Next Time,
Macy
