I found that being a being backpacker, I was constantly looking for new foods and snacks to bring on the trails. This lead me to start to compile a list of mostly foods and snacks that did not require heat or cooking in order to eat. Below is that list:
Foods/Snacks:
-anything dehydrated or prepackaged "backpacking meals" these kinds of meals seem to have gotten a lot better over time, most however require some sort of cooking
-beef jerky
-cliff bars or any of your favorite granola bars, preferably ones without ingredients that will melt on hot days
-tortillas
-tortilla chips
-apple sauce pouches
-fruit leather
-dehydrated/dried fruits
-nuts of all shapes and sized (seasoned or unseasoned)
-prepackaged tuna, chicken, spam
-granola
-dry cereal
-candy, preferably ones without ingredients that will melt on hot days -crackers
-goldfish
-chips
-slim jims
-gatorade/powerade, favorite kind of drink that has extra electrolytes
-hard cheeses and meats such as summer sausage and salami that will last longer than most other meats and cheeses, however these snack/meals should be eaten early on in the trip to avoid spoiling
-stove top stuffing
-powdered hummus
-mini oreos and other snack sized treats
-butter powder
-nut butters including peanut butter
-beans
-instant oats
-fruits such as apples, bananas, and oranges, keep in mind you will have to carry out any fruit waste you may have, so some fruits and vegetables may be better than others
-veggies such as carrots, peppers, and celery
*also, always keep in mind to pack out what you carry in, trash and food waste is not to be left on trails or in nature areas, trash and waste left in areas they are not native cause damage to the fragile ecosystems at play, therefore you should always follow the leave no trace policy
Until Next Time,
Macy
